I Share My Spiritual Journey
I was talking on the phone with my mom a few years ago, excitedly telling her about the book I was writing—my fifth. I thought maybe she would offer a “well-done.”
I paused. Silence. Finally, she kindly said, “Scott, I didn’t realize you had so much to say!” Then we both laughed! 🙂
Today, I take her words to heart. What will people remember out of my gazillion words in a funding appointment?
Growth rate % of my mission agency?
My “dazzling vision?”
My opinions about life?
Years ago, I visited a donor to thank him for his gift to The Navigators Daily Walk Ministry. He had never met a Navigator. I was apprehensive. What should I say to this stranger?
After getting acquainted, I shared my spiritual journey—five minutes. Then I asked about his spiritual journey. He nodded, then haltingly began. As he continued, he became emotional, sharing how Christ had come into his life. He finished with tears in his eyes.
Then he said, “No one has ever asked about my testimony, not even my pastor.” Now I had tears in my eyes.
However, some missionaries protest, “I have a boring testimony.” Okay, then tell how Christ became personal to you. Let us not call what God has done boring!
Around the world I have observed that potential partners enjoy hearing our spiritual journeys, and they feel honored when we ask about theirs—that’s what they remember!
What I do: I continue to sharpen my testimony so it connects meaningfully with non-believers and believers, eliminating Christian lingo and rambling stories. And I close with a favorite Scripture.
What I say: “Before I share about my ministry, may I tell you how it began. I wouldn’t be here today had not been for [a painting of Jesus in the basement….”]
Prayer: Father in Heaven, everyone has a story—including me. Thank you for intervening in my life and calling me to ministry. Please help me to effectively share what You have done with me. Amen.
