Fundraising in a Bad Economy!
What if you live in a country where the economy is going downhill? Can you still fundraise while your countrymen suffer?
During economic downturns I am tempted to:
- Freeze in fear and hope things will improve
- Hide finances from my spouse. “Everything is fine.”
- Eat chocolate ice cream out of the carton(s) late at night
- Blame the other political party
Instead, how about taking three action steps?
Your secret weapon in fundraising!
You have a secret weapon in fundraising. It is available 24/7. It doesn’t have an expiration date like a carton of milk. It does wonders in bringing gospel-workers to full funding.
I’m not talking about prayer—though that is indispensable. (I wish I were better at it.) Nor is it your passion for ministry. And it is not your sparkling personality—though you might underestimate the simple fact that “people like you!” They do!
80% is not full funding!
A few years ago I met a missionary who wanted to increase his support. “We don’t ask. We just minister to people and some of them give. God is taking care of us,” he said proudly....
Asking Others to do What You Don't?
Recently a friend strongly exhorted me to use a certain type of health supplement which he used daily. The veins in his neck bulged out as he evangelized me about the how this supplement would “do wonders for me.”
Are You Honoring Your Parents In Your Fundraising?
What does your family think about your fundraising?
Consider you a spiritualized beggar
Embarrassed and hope you don’t appeal to their friends
“Okay” with your decision to go into ministry but don’t understand what you do
Assume you will be poor all your life and that they will have to subsidize you 100% behind you in your choice to go into gift-income ministry
Fundraising Lessons From Around The World
The Mombasa Solution is needed!
The Mombasa Kenya Nav team under Timm and Carol Njuguna, gathered Thursday mornings to work on funding—together! Their agenda:
Share successes and disappointments on funding since the last meeting
Study scriptures and pray
Phone prospective donors to set appointments
Two Things Your Donors Won't Tell You
I was on the phone last week with a potential giving partner who told me about encounters she and her husband have had with missionaries. Here are two conclusions from our conversation based on her experiences.
Deputized Fundraising On The Way Out?
During my travels I hear increasing comments questioning the value of personal support, such as:
“Since deputized fundraising is going away….”
“Raising personal support was for a previous generation.”
“Since people are not faithful in giving for missions we must focus on the business model of funding.”
Three Toxic Phrases Good Fundraisers Never Use
Last week, I accompanied a missionary friend I am coaching on a fundraising appointment. As I listened to him present his dazzling vision, it occured to me that I did not hear the three toxic phrases. It was refreshing.
How about you? Do these toxic words come out of your mouth or your computer?
