I was on the phone last week with a potential giving partner who told me about encounters she and her husband have had with missionaries. Here are two conclusions from our conversation based on her experiences.

Lately I've been asking people this question: Was Jesus a joyful person?

My friends are puzzled and they want to say yes, but then I ask, "What proof is there that Jesus was joyful?" What do you think?

From my study so far, here are three answers and a fourth surprising one! 

When missionaries are emotionally drained, fundraising and donor ministry become overwhelming! Phoning even one potential donor is impossible. "Our hearts are right, but we are out of gas--elephants are standing on our air hose!

Though painful lessons over the years, God has impressed on me these seven life management skills:

Your giving partners (‘donors’ is not a great word’) are not ATM machines that feed you cash on demand! If you demonstrate care, concern and love they will notice! Here are 10 small acts of love your donors will appreciate. I call them “tremendous trifles.”

The Stewardship Foundation in the United Kingdom recently published a survey showing how much time mission workers spent each month to keep their giving partners informed. Before you glance down to look at their results, what are yours? How much time do you spend each month informing and serving your donors? This includes:

During my travels I hear increasing comments questioning the value of personal support, such as: 

• “Since deputized fundraising is going away….”

• “Raising personal support was for a previous generation.”

• “Since people are not faithful in giving for missions we must focus on the business model of funding.”

Last week, I accompanied a missionary friend I am coaching on a fundraising appointment. As I listened to him present his dazzling vision, it occured to me that I did not hear the three toxic phrases. It was refreshing.
